How Can I Get My Dog To Chew Her Food?

I have a borador (Border Collie Labrador mix) puppy, like 8 months old and I feed her 2 times a day. She NEVER chews it, just swallows her hard food whole. She eats puppy chow. Is there any way to make her chew it?

    • Get ones of these:http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_10?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=slow%20feed%20dog%20bowl&sprefix=slow%20feed%20,aps,459&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aslow%20feed%20dog%20bowlThat will slow her down.Edit:Before I was born, my mom had a dog who would swallow his food like yours, she spoon fed him (yes, it's true) and he soon stopped eating his food fast.

    • You can put a hard ball or 2 in the dish this can help to slow them down..Another method I have heard is to put only a few kibbles in the dish at a time(until she learns) and usually the dog will chew them if there are only a few. Hand feeding her kibble a few at a time could help to.

    • Try feeding her in a separate room, away from everybody else. They make bowls called Slow Feed bowls that help slow down a dog's eating. Also, I recommend getting her off of Puppy Chow immediately. It is a very poor quality dog food and is mainly just corn.

    • Dogs don't chew their food they inhale it. Anybody who tells you different doesn't know what their talking about, ask a Vet. If you come up with a way other than the answers you just got about giving her 1 piece at a time which is good if you have no life at all other than feeding your dog LET EVERYONE KNOW you'll probably become famous.

    • They have little pouches at petco called mixables and you mix them in with hard food to make the dog want to eat it. Or you can try letting the hard food soak in hot water to make it easier to eat.

    • If you're interested, I recommend just feeding RAW meat, which is a THOUSANDS times healthier for your dog. RAW meat is what a dog NEEDS, not just what he wants. Kibble is terribly unhealthy for your dog, even the good kibbles like Orijen or Acana. The reason is is because kibble is processed and has many preservatives, additives, and grains (veggies) dumped into it. These are the things dogs DON'T need! Dogs need meat and ONLY meat. Dogs don't need grains/vegetables AT ALL and can hardly digest them properly. Their teeth were made to tear and rip meat, as were their intestinal tract. If you were to dissect a dog, you would notice that his intestines are only 0.2% different from the wolves, and wolves only eat MEAT! You never see a wolf attacking a wheat or corn field, you only see them hunting MEAT as that is the only thing they need. Millions of dogs eat kibble, and millions of dogs fill the waiting rooms of veterinarians, bad breath and all. These pets suffer from dermatitises of all sorts, or from cancers, joint problems, heart problems, kidney problems, digestive problems ("lack of enzymes"), liver problems, pancreas problems, coat problems, tooth problems, anal gland problems, glandular disorders, allergies, and soft doughy bodies brought on by eating a grain-based, artificial, highly-processed, additive-filled food touted as "healthy" for your dog. Thousands of dogs die from diet-induced diseases like bloat each year (and that is not to say all diseases are caused by diet, but many of them link strongly with processed diets and diet-induced periodontal disease. Refer to Raw Meaty Bones for a more in-depth discussion.), and yet the industry keeps on churning out artificial pet foods and vets keep recommending them to their clients. If you decide to feed RAW (Which is cheaper and WAY healthier for your dog), you should feed 80% muscle meat, 10% organs (5% of which should be liver), and 10% bone! It's extremely easy to do and not even expensive! You should feed about 2-3% of your dogs body weight. If you don't feel like measuring out the food, feed him whatever he'll eat. If he gets skinny, feed more, and if he gets too fat, feed less. It's very simple and your dog will LOVE you for and live A LOT longer than a normal dog that eats kibble.
