I have a 3 year old bc lab mix. We adopted the other when she was 4 months and she just turned one . We are not sure what she is mixed with but she has a lot of border collie characteristcs from the way she looks to her high energy level. I feed them both purina lamb and rice formula. I recently switched my oldest to purina healthy weight. I also took the 1 year old off ur puppy food 2 months ago and put her on the lamb and rice formula. Thank you!

    • Eh, Purina isn't the best food to feed your dog.Try Eukanuba or Science Diet. They are more expensive, but are MUCH better for your dog's health. For future reference, anything that you buy purchase in Wal-Mart/Target or a Grocery store is not suitable food and shouldn't be given to your pet.Sorry, but to those of you who think Iams and Purina is okay, you need to research what goes into that food. By-products and a bunch of stuff that you don't even want to know about.A brand that I've been seeing a lot about is Taste of the Wild, which is probably the best quality food for the lowest price. It can be purchased at most Tractor Supply places.

    • Homemade dog food is the best! but if that is not possible: http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/health/articles/feeding-homemade-dog-food.htmlAt least feed a commercial dog food brand that meets ALL SIX of these requirements:All the ingredients have PASSED USDA INSPECTION. Most dog food brands will fail this requirement and should not be fed.The FIRST TWO INGREDIENTS are pure meat. Most dog food brands will fail this requirement and should not be fed.Contains NO corn or soybeans, which are difficult for dogs to digest and cause skin allergies in many dogs. Most dog food brands will fail this requirement and should not be fed.Contains NO "by-products" or "animal digest" whatsoever. Most dog food brands will fail this requirement and should not be fed.Contains NO artificial preservatives (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin). Most dog food brands will fail this requirement and should not be fed.Contains NO "fillers" that don't sound like real food you would eat yourself. (Examples include bizarre ingredients like beet pulp, rice flour, and brewer's rice.) Most dog food brands will fail this requirement and should not be fed.

    • Purina isn't a great food and neither are Eukanuba or Science Diet. Look for a food without any corn, wheat, soy, or by products that lists a meat as the first ingredient.High Quality Foods:Orijen- http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/about/Natura (Innova, EVO, California Natural)- http://www.naturapet.com/Blue Buffalo- http://www.bluebuff.com/Merrick- http://www.merrickpetcare.com/Canidae- http://www.canidae.com/ Solid Gold- http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/Wellness Core- http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/dog_wellness_grain_index.htmlNatural Balance- http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/Taste of the Wild- http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul- http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/Or go raw- http://www.dogguide.net/raw-diet-basics.phphttp://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=betterproductshttp://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ADD: I'm aware that "grocery store foods" won't kill a dog. I've had a dog that lived a long, healthy life eating nothing but Pedigree. I never claimed that feeding anything but these foods was unacceptable. I merely stated that some brands are lower quality than others and if you're willing to pay for a good food, these are the ones I would recommend. In my case, my mutt has food allergies so feeding him a diet primarily of corn would be rather cruel in addition to being unhealthy. I just feel that dogs should be fed mostly meat rather than corn and because the question was stated as "What is the best dog food for border collie mix?", I listed what I consider to be good foods.

    • Jordan; where are you getting this information? Iams now sells dog food in grocery stores and they make Eukanuba. Purina ProPlan is as good as anything Iams makes and is more palatable than most Science Diet products. Grocery stores sell many dog food brands that are perfectly acceptable for most dogs. Purina One, Iams, and Pedigree are just a few. There is no "best" food for a Border Collie mix or any dog for that matter. Some dogs do well on anything, others can only eat 1 or 2 brands without getting sick. The designer dog foods listed in some answers are all high quality but the notion that ONLY these foods should be fed is just silly. I have patients that have lived 15-18 years on grocery store foods and others that have been sickly and die at a young age eating dog food that costs more than steak. Are the foods listed preferable? Sure. Are they necessary? In most cases, absolutely not.

    • My dogs are on purina one now and have been on several other foods before as well we find they do really well on things with sweet potato, rice, and lamb. Their coats look verry shiny and their weight stays under control really well.

    • i have had border collies many years, i advise you stop the lamb its to rich and fatty to digest properly,Chicken and rice is good for most dogs mixed with a handful or so of quality dried food with a veg content i find to be fine for my collies.

    • If their doing good on it why switch? Purinas not bad. Just add some chicken or hamburger sometimes so they get a little bit more meat. Thats what I do for my dogs, and they are mixed with a herding breed.

    • purina isnt a good brand, neaither is iams or eukenuba ,they are full of corn and by producttry Wellness super5mixnatural with no corn or by productits a 5 star rated brandi have my dog on it n he loves it n doing great on it, n the vet agreesand if u join the mailing club, they give out coupons every monthand since it doesnt have fillers, they tend to need to eat less kibble to feel full n the food last longer, worth the money

    • I highly recommend Flint River Ranch for any type of breed. They sell All-Natural oven baked kibbles that are made fresh and delivered to your door. Their food does not contain corn, by-products or chemical additives used as preservatives, which are bad to a dogs health. It is very important to read the label of any dog food you consider. When you read the Flint River Ranch label you will see that the meat is listed first. I have a 10-month labrador retriever and she has always eaten Flint River Ranch. It was recommended by our breeder and she love's it! She has a beautiful shiny coat and great skin, even though it is winter and the air is dry in our house from the wood stove. I also like the fact that she does not shed like a lot of other dogs. If you are interested in giving Flint River Ranch a try, please check out my link. http://FlintRiver.devbury.comGood Luck!

    • I have researched this in depth since my poor dog died of kidney failure due to poor quality dog food!!(this is the only reason I answer these questions … to try and save a dogs life or at least to not let him/her suffer because of bad food)Fromm Dog Food is Great for dogs and cats …http://www.frommfamily.com/ $42- $45 per 30 lb bagNO fillers….some good quality grains….NO corn….gluten or by-products or wheatALL human grade food….fruits…veggies and probiotics!!WHOLE fruits and veggies!!!! Just like the kind we get at our grocery stores!check it out you wont regret it !FROMM 4 STAR product line is the best!!!!!!!http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/TOTW has a high protein content (not recommeded for non athletic dogs)Taste of the Wild contains Ethoxyquin which is a toxic fish preservative. (TOTW says that the cooking process kills all of it but it scared me away from their product)around $42 for a 30 lb bag .... its the cheapest 6 star food ..http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ lots of great dog food choices on this site !!Orijen and Welness are great but it is $60 - $80 for a 30 lb bag…high protein as well ..not good for non athletic dogs(IMO)Orijen is WAY to high in protein for a non working/non-agility dog ..(IMO)Fromm Is what my puppy gets it has a lower protein % and great ingredients! 5 outta 6 stars due to lower protein (but most dogs should not have high protein levels …. It makes their kidneys work overtime for no reason)You can get it online and if you go to the website you can find stores near you .. they wont be at walmarts and the like... they are in feed stores .. Agway..tractor supply stores etcIF your dog is not going to be a hard working/agility dog all this high protein can do more harm than good in the long run,,, you wont notice it now but it can take its toll on a dogs kidneys as it ages.(IMO)http://4healthdogfood.tripod.com/there is also a brand called 4health at the tractor supply store.. it is only $30 for a 30 lb bag.. and it seems to be of good quality. (not as good as the foods mentioned above but it good for the price if you are on a tight budget.)also of you go to http://www.tractorsupply.com you can get a printable $5 off coupon!!they have tons of low and high end foods there(including TOTW and 4 Health)
