Did she escape and got lost from chasing a small animal or was she dumped and abandoned? She is a German Shepard American Foxhound mix and her collar said Diva.We adopted her from the shelter in May and she has been great. We realized when we take her on walks and she she's a squirrel she jumps and runs in circles and barks and the shelter did not tell us she had any problems with squirrels and broke her collar while tied up in our yard to go after a squirrel. She is very friendlily and affectionate and sleeps on our bed sometimes and never pees or poops in the house and sits for treats. She barks and whines when any of us leaves the house and barks at the window when she sees a wild hare . When we adopted her from the shelter the people at the shelter said they know nothing about her or her owners but they named her because her collar had a name on it and she was also spayed before captured and put in the shelter and was healthy and not malnutrist. We kept her name Diva.Nobody claimed her. I feel a dog that is found healthy and that is friendlily and trained and stubborn can't have been abused or dumped. What would your guess be?Her collar has our tags and the shelter made the tags for us.

    • I've heard stories of dogs in good condition found with collars on. The owners didn't want them anymore so they released them. That is a possibility that even with the collar on the owner didn't care to find him because it was too much trouble or just let him loose instead of taking him to a shelter. However, because he had been recently neutered and was in good condition I do believe the dog was lost. Perhaps he had an elderly owner that didn't know how to/ couldn't search for him? Perhaps he's far away from home. Maybe someone in the neighborhood didn't like the dog roaming and picked it up and took her to the shelter. That isn't uncommon. Dogs that track with scent can easily get lost because they will follow the scent and not pay attention. I feel bad the original owners are missing him, especially since they cared enough to spay her. :(

    • People dump all sorts of dogs for all sorts of reasons. If she managed to escape from the home of a responsible (or even just caring) owner they would have looked for her and found her in the shelter. A responsible owner would have had more than just her name on her tag. She probably just lucked out and was found but Animal Control or who ever brought her to the shelter before she was loose for too long. If she was brought in by someone other than animal control it is also possible she was brought in by he owner who didn't want to admit she was their dog. It is also possible the owner knew she was picked up but didn't want to pay the fine to get her back

    • Who knows. Many dogs are quite friendly even with uncaring owners, and even people who care little for their pets want a dog that behaves well. My guess would be either she was dumped or she ran off and the owners didn't care enough to look for her- if they had, they'd have reported her lost to the local shelters and claimed her when she came in. Really, if she'd been a valued companion, she'd have had a microchip and/or at least a tag with the owner's contact info. Strays which are never claimed aren't dogs that were well-loved by their owners.

    • If she was lost, all the owners had to do was check at shelter. Owners dumping their great pets is nothing new. I've adopted fantastic dogs from the shelters. Already trained, house broken, fixed, up to date on shots, healthy, etc but yet given up or never bothered to claim at shelter. More likely they didn't want to pay fine for loose dog &/or not current on rabies or just didn't want anymore. Their loss is your gain.

    • Wait a min. Any dog you get in a shelter in that good of condition ,is most likely a runner. Sooo with that knowledge, you would make sure she has a tag, that has your phone # on it. She probably got lost chasing small animals.(which foxhounds are born to do) What difference does it make anyway. You rescued her, and now she is yours.

    • She could have ran off just like she did with you and the squirrels. Who knows - she found a home with you now and hopefully you will have her for many years. The owner's loss is your gain. She's yours now.

    • She probably escaped her yard, maybe the owners looked for her for a little while and then gave up. Dogs can travel long distances and be from the next city or even farther but there are usually signs that a dog has travel far (thin, paw pads worn and toenails short).Sometimes people loose their dogs and can never find them, those owners just hope that somewhere, someone took her in and gave her a good home.My guess was that she had a caring owner but may not have taken the time (or known how) to train her to stay in the yard and not chase squirrels.
