    • This is a huge field of an answer. Dogs who hunt small game are different from dogs who hunt deer and are different from dogs who flush and retrieve birds. We're talking a LOT of breeds!Beagles hunt rabbits. If you know rabbits, they run by zigzagging to catch their hunter unawares by the rapid change of direction. This is how they escape. A Beagle can flush a rabbit and run it into the path of the hunter, taking into account how a rabbit runs. This is why Beagles hunt 'back and forth' to the path of the hunter.Schipperkes were 'barge dogs' bred to flush and kill vermin on ships. Other 'ratters' include (but not limited to) Jack Russel Terrier and the Rat Terrier. Many more small breeds come from vermin control makings as we humans didn't always have the supermarket full of chemicals to rid our lives of vermin. Dachshunds were bred for hunting badger and are 'earth dogs' who dig and go after prey with great tensity. Other low slung breeds may well have been developed for similar den hunting abilities - Basset Hound, Plott Hound, Corgies.... but I'm not as familiar and am guessing in that respect.Coonhounds are the dog of choice for larger prey such as Racoons and Boar. The larger the hound, the larger the prey. These dogs hunt cooperatively in numbers for greater effect. They have a distinctive bark that alerts the hunter to their location as well as whether they have treed the prey. Fox Hounds are similar in nature, hunting cooperatively in numbers and alerting the hunter vocally when the quarry is captured/cornered. Hounds include (but not limited to) Black & Tan, Redbone, Blue Tick, Treeing Walker, American Foxhound, English Walker. Bird dogs come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending upon the type of bird being hunted. Quail differ from Geese who differ from ducks and so on. Quail and other flushing bird dogs were bred for stealthy approach to the prey, signaling to the hunter by being 'on point' and then retrieving the fallen bird for the hunter. Bird dogs 'tend' to be of the Spanial variety, duck dogs are larger and have a coat to withstand cold water such as Labradors, Goldens, and the standard Poodle.Deer are larger than 'small prey' even when the deer are small in stature. Deer Hounds got their name for the job they were bred to do, hunt deer. Not many people use dogs for hunting deer anymore.
