ok lets see if you are talking about the staffordshire bull terrier then they are not the same breed but if you are talking about the american staffordshire terrier then they are said to be the same breed but some people contradicts this because they say the bloodlines have been separated for to long and also i guess you can say the american staffordshire terrier is the show dog of the american pitbull terrier and thas is an actual breed. the american staffordshire terrier can be registered with the akc but then can also be regestered with the ukc as a american pitbull terrier. hopes this helps

    • The AKC recognizes the Staffordshire terriers but not the Pitbull, however the United Kennel Club, another legitimate registry in the USA does recognize the Pitbull.

    • The Pit Bull, which is NOT a breed recognized by the AKC, despite the number of people claiming to have a "purebred American Pit Bull Terrier", is a conglomeration of any number of dogs, mostly those of the "bully" type, which is to say barrel-chested and strong-jawed. One of those legitimate breeds is the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Another is the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier.People getting a registered dog of either of the Staffie breeds have a better chance that it was raised by a responsible breeder than those getting a Pit Bull, since Pit Bulls are bred strictly for profit as they cannot be registered and shown to conformation titles.

    • Staffordshires are one of the breeds of dog created years ago by crossing the Bulldog with various Terrier breeds, that were originally bred to fight other dogs in the pit.So in that regard, Staffies are 'one of the pitbull breeds'.An American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is another such breed of dog.The Staffy & the APBT are very similar, and probably the closest breed to one another - but they are different breeds. It's like comparing a Chevrolet Camaro with a Pontiac Firebird.Different makes, but practically identical.

    • They are basically the same breed. Staffies were bred off of pitt bulls. Think of them like this- Staffies are the AKC reg., fancy, more likely to be friendly version; Pitts are the street, more likely to be used as fighters, longer, leaner, and not eligible for AKC registration. Pitt lines are more likely to have aggression in them.NOTE: Most pitts are gentle, good dogs... only ones badly bred or specifically bred for it tend to be aggressive.

    • Here is some good information for you. It says that they have been separated for too long to be considered the same dog, but at one point they were.http://www.pitbull411.com/profile.html

    • I have two neighbors one has two Staffordshire Terriers and the other has a Pitbull. They argue all the time about bloods lines and etc bc the pitbull owner says the terriers are the same as her dog. Then the terrier owner insists they are not. The do kinda look similar but I wanted to know if they are different breeds of dog or just different names for the same breed of dog.Yes I meant American Staffordshire Terrier
