The younger your dog the better. Also, Rottweilers thrive on training and NEED training to be very well behaved dogs (rowdy rottweilers are no fun to deal with).Keep training sessions short (about 10 minutes) every day or two 5 minute sessions a day (or a little longer if your dog is up for it, but never very long or your puppy will get bored). Try to do training AFTER your puppy has played so that they are now calm and not really rowdy. Using treats and praise is the easiest thing to use for motivation. Also train somewhere away from distraction. Now for the commands. Sit is very easy. Take a treat and put it in front of your dogs face and slowly move it up over your dogs head but very slightly and it will usually cause the puppy to sit. When he sits say YES! or GOOD BOY@ very excitedly and give him the treat (but make sure he gets the treat while he is still sitting, don't wait for him to stand up again). Do this until he understands what you want him to do, then start saying sit while doing the command. He will pick this up fast. For stay have your puppy sit and then take a small step back. If he does not move quickly reward him and tell him good boy/pet him. Do this several times and once he understands that he must not move, add the word STAY to the command. The hand signal used is usually your palm facing the dog like as if you were signaling somebody to STOP. Eventually start taking bigger steps backwards. If he moves out of a sit put him back into a sit and take a smaller step backwards. Once your dog has mastered stay, come is pretty much the easiest. Have your dog sit and stay, then bend down and say "-dogs name- come!" and when they get to you give them a treat and praise them very enthusiastically, they will catch on fast.Once you master these commands try doing them outside in your backyard where there is more distraction. Slowly move from your backyard to out in public places so your dog learns to do these commands in public. Another thing is NEVER get frustrated. If you are starting to get frustrated with your dog stop training and take a break. Always use a calm, steady voice and never repeat the command over and over again. Also, always end the training on a positive note. If you are trying to teach your dog stay but your dog becomes unfocused and just isn't getting it, and you are becoming frustrated do a command your dog already knows like "sit" and then end the session. Also make sure you socialize your dog. Rottweilers can become protective and aggressive with people/animals if they dont meet more people and animals. Take your puppy EVERYWHERE with you and let them meet children, men, women, and also other dogs/cats, etc. Good luck! Rotties are awesome dogs and can learn many commands if you have patience!

    • I have a two months almost three male rottweiler and I want to teach him to do the basics, sit, come, stay. That's it for now, any ideas on how to train him? Also, is three months old a good time to start training him?

    • You start training any dog in obedience and especially behaviour and socialisation on the first day they have been brought home, the long training is put off the harder it will be to train a dog especially large dogs. When you teach a dog to come, it is best to keep him on a long leash, give the command and the name once then praise when the dog is sitting in front of you. When you teach a dog to sit, try kneeling in front of the dog, saying the command and the dogs name, then softly push the dogs butt down until he is sitting or you could stand in front of the dog and raise a dog treat above your head as you say the command. When teaching a dog to stay, get the dog to sit first, say the command and slowly back away 5ft, if the dog move quietly go back to his original position and step back. Once the dog has stayed for 5sec, 10sec then 20sec go up to the dog and praise himA puppy is more likely to listen to you if you sound calm and happy, if you call the dog excitedly you will only excite the dog and if you are angry or frustrated the dog will either try to get away from you or will also become angry or frustrated. You can also try these youtube videos for basic dog commands:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaG-y2tFBFEhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QonpHq930Rk
