    • When I had my german shepherd we gave him iams and he was very playful. Ppl get puppy chow because its the cheapest brand. But before giving him a different food mi it with the old brand for a few beause if you switch it right away he will have diahrea

    • Look at the ingredients lists. Meat (not meal) of some type should be the first ingredient. There should be no corn, wheat or by-products. Innova, Wellness, Orijen & Merrick are a few of the good brands out there. Puppy chow is a lot of hype and actually causes bone growth problems in bigger dogs. If, when, you change your pups food, do it gradually so as not to upset his stomach.

    • GSD'S Do best on a Lamb base diet. Canidae, Diamond Naturals, NutriSource, California Naturals, Eagle Pac, are just a few good brands for GSD'S. All of the brands I have mentioned come in grain free as well!I don't care for Purina Puppy Chow, but its better then Ol'Roy, Pedigree, Kibbles & Bits, Beneful, etc...

    • Puppy chow is fine at first.. but it's not good food. Innova and Wellness for large breed puppies is the best. Or even Blue Buffalo. But they tend to be verrry expensive. If you can't afford the $70 a month for the big bags, get yourself some kind of Large Breed Puppy food. You want to make sure his bones and muscles are being developed right... and that includes feeding him food for his size, not the same food you would feed a maltese.

    • I don't know if that is the best brand.I personally feed EVO to my dogs (an adult Golden Retriever and a Leonberger puppy) which is grain free and high in protein. Most large-breed dog breeders advise against feeding puppy food, or at least for the giant breeds. If the calcium intake is more than 1.5% (i think that is what it is, but don't quote me) it will cause them to grow too quickly...leading to bone and joint issues. Slow and steady growth is best. Some good brands: EVO, Innova, Canidae, Blue Buffalo, Wellness, and Solid Gold

    • Puppy chow is a brand of dog food made of by-products.Yuck! I would feed him Wellness Puppy Food. (Graually introduce it) This food is made with all natural ingredients. Check out the top ten dog foods:http://www.dogfoodscoop.com/10-best-dog-food.htmlYour dog will thank you when you chose the best for him. Wellness has it all

    • Puppy chow is not good, nothing you find at walmart or any other grocery store is going to be good.Foods I recommend are: Orijen, Wellness, Taste of The Wild, Blue Buffalo Wilderness, EVO, Canidae, Innova, Merrick, Solid Gold. There are lots more good foods but that is all I can think of at the moment. Here is a site that can tell you what are some good dog foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/Usually pretty explanatory.I feed Diamond Naturals as a kibble, but my dog is on a raw diet.ADD: Since he is a large breed puppy you do not want to feed too much protein, I would not go over 27%. Make sure you check the ingredients though, puppy chows first ingredient is corn, a lot of the protein in that food would be coming from corn and corn isn't digestible by dogs. The first ingredient MUST be a named meat meal, if it actually says MEAT you have no idea what kind of meat it is, you want it to be named.

    • Named meats should be the main ingredients in a dog food. Meat is what dogs are meant to eat not grains and very little to no fruits and veggies. Grains are hard on dogs digestive systems and don't have much nutritional value. Things that shouldn't be on the ingredient list: unnamed meats, unnamed fats, by products, animal digest, corn, soy, wheat, added sugar, and artificial flavors/colors/preservatives. Those are not needed in a canine's diet and a lot of the artificial preservatives are harmful. I personally feed my German Shepherd Dog Nature's Variety Instinct: Beef & Lamb formula. My dogs love this food and it is fit for all life stages. It can be pricey but you can print a $3 off coupon whenever you want and you actually feed way less because the dog is using what it's eating. You can get a sample from most places and see how your dog does on it. Other good foods are Orijen, Acana Grain Free, Wellness/CORE, EVO, Before Grain, and Canidae Grain Free Pure.

    • Your breeders did not educate themselves about nutrition. Did they know anything about genetics or health testing? I recommend this method for choosing and feeding commercial dog food.Feeding Commercial Dog FoodChoose a high quality food by going to a pet supply or feed store and reading the labels. Remember “high five” or “give me five” as you read. The first five ingredients should be meats and vegetables and grains (unless your dog is itchy or chews himself, then go to a grain-free food). The very first ingredient is a meat. A second meat in the top five is very good. (Thanks to The Whole Dog Journal.)Not in the top five ingredients is any by-product, corn, wheat, or soy. A by-product is usually very low quality, such as chicken by-products are the feet, beak, and feathers. Not much nutrition there! Corn, wheat, and soy are cheap fillers and not easily metabolized by the dog. Use the package feeding guidelines to measure the daily amount of food for your dog’s weight. Divide that measured amount into separate meals. Puppies up to 10 or 12 weeks need four meals per day. Older puppies need three meals per day until they are adolescents and stop growing taller. Then the adult dogs can be fed in two meals per day for life.At each meal, put the measured amount of food in his dish and add a spoonful or two of warm water to enhance the aroma. Call the dog over and let him eat. In fifteen minutes or when he has cleaned the dish, whichever comes first, take up the dish. He gets no other treats or snacks until the next meal. Training treats can be pieces of his regular kibble. This should create a healthy, eager eater.

    • What do you want in a dog food? Do you want a food certified and tested to contain all the nutrients dogs are know to need? Do you want one widely and successfully fed by well informed people? Do you want one that won't upset your puppy's digestion? If so, you will continue the Puppy chow. Do you feel nothing inexpensive produced by a large company is decent? Do you want to be able to sit around Starbucks and brag how much you pay for your dog food? Do you need the reassurance of paying a high price to prove you love your dog? Then risk upsetting his digestion with a food that has no evidence it is any better. Check some of the rating sites and see how much attention they pay to the size of the company that makes the food, and never mention the nutrients available.

    • The first thing you always want to do when evaluating a dog food or any pet food is to read the ingredients and also read the guaranteed analysis. You want a to choose a food that contains no chicken by-products, ground corn, artificial flavors or preservatives and a food that has omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for a beautiful skin and coat. You also want to know where the food is manufactured and who is manufacturing it. I highly recommend you feed Nutro Ultra Large Breed Puppy. It’s a great formula that I know your puppy will like. It has three proteins; chicken, lamb and salmon that dogs really love the taste. It is specifically formulated for the nutritional needs of the large breed puppy. It has lots of super foods and has omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for beautiful skin and coat. Nutro is made in the US in their own factories. In fact each factory goes through 600 quality checks per day to ensure freshness, safety and quality. Other brands of pet food do not manufacture their own food. I’m a pet nutrition specialist with Nutro and have been feeding it to my animals for 25 years. In fact, I started feeding it to my lab/pit mix back in the day because she had itchy scratchy skin. After feeding Nutro her skin issues went away and she had a beautiful skin and coat and I've been feeding it ever since.
