How hard would it be to house train a ten-year old Basset Hound mix? Suggestions?

We are looking to adopt a 10-year old Basset Hound mix (they thing Beagle as well) from a local shelter, but he's always been an outdoor dog and isn't house trained. We would like to have him in the house at least occasionally, and especially in our cold winter months. How difficult would it be to train him to go to the bathroom outside? Any suggestions on how to teach an old dog new tricks?

Extremely difficult. The dog has been going where it wants to for ten whole years thats like a human going wherever he wanted for 70 years of his life! If I were you I'd just go on and try to find something much younger.
