What is the best type of dog that is both a hound and relatively big?

We are looking for another dog to add to our family. We have a 5 year old shih tzu right now. We would prefer a hound that is relatively big, loyal, family friendly, and can withstand hot temperatures. Thank you!

    • Greyhound! They're fantastic dogs. Most shed very little, they're very laid back (nickname: 40 mph couch potato!), they're friendly, and many get along great with other animals. I have a retired racer and he is fantastic, I wouldn't get any other breed after having a Grey!

    • There's the Bloodhound which are large and powerful and the most acute sense of smell in all of the dog breeds! Their kind and gentle, and good with children. On the down side they also drool a lot, LOL.http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll54/pink_hippo_photos/bloodhound.jpgThe Greyhound, which are sleek and built for speed are very loyal dogs. They are sometimes reserved around strangers and on the shy side. They have intelligence and a definite prey instinct (so expect them to chase anything that moves quickly!).http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w80/sportygrl31690/italian_greyhound.jpgRhodesian Ridgeback, what a well muscled and magnificent dog! They're dignified, loyal and make great family pets! If you get a puppy they can be rambunctious so watch them around children at that young age.http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d165/SplitCat/100_1391.jpgAnd then theres the Black and Tan Coonhound, a large powerful working hound.Theyre quick to learn, loyal and make awesome companions. Gentle with people and dedicated workers. Make sure though to give good physical exercise or they can become high strung.http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r334/jgsisof5/BlackTanCoonhound.jpgIf you want big, may as well get the biggest of the big the Irish Wolfhound. Even though theyre large, they're not aggressive and are very sweet tempered. They adore their family and can be left alone long periods without an problems.http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj211/PRS440/73072784.jpgOr there is the Borzoi, long and lean. They can be quiet the couch potato and are well behaved indoors. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w156/Wakeup87/borzoi_adams.jpg
