What kind of puppy should I buy for my son?

I have never owned a dog (only cats). I plan on spending the next year researching the perfect puppy for my son and then getting him his first puppy by the time is beginning to walk. I want a dog that is loving, sweet, very playful and also protective. I prefer smaller to mid-size dogs but would consider any breed. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your comments, suggestions and feedback.

a golden lab, they are sooo cute and faithful, perfect 4 a boy

miniature daushund or beagles are good cause they are friendly and small

Miniture Collie. Whatever you do, don't get him a pit bull.

I would suggest a boxer...I have 2.They are great with kids..and loving...and loves to play..but than at the same time will be protective . I have not regreted gettting boxers.Good Luck in your decision making. I know its a hard choice.

Get him a Cocker Spaniel

get 'em a little jack russell to toy around with...or a lab 'cuz they will by loyal and loving forever.

I highly recomend A Labrador or Golden retreiver,I work with dogs,they more expensive but a great temperment

Definitely a black lab. I have one and they are the smartest dogs. Will play with the kids in the pool, play fetch, and will be gentle with the children. Great pets!

hi there the best puppy to get is a shitzu as they are perfect they love kids very easy to train and very loving i have had mine for 2 years now her name is chica she is adorable .

ANY LABRADOR RETRIEVER WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT CHOICE, THOUGHT I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I'M PARTIAL TO BLACKS. THEY ARE GREAT WITH KIDS, GOOD PROTECTORS, NATURALLY AFFECTIONATE AND LOVE TO PLEASE THEIR MASTERS. THEY'RE ALSO SOFT AND CUDDLY DOGS, GREAT FOR KIDS.

A lab or a goldenretiver are the best for family's if you like a med to large dog.beagle's are nice too.

If you want a smaller breed, I'd go with a pug. They're cute and reliable. A good medium breed is an Australian Cattle dog. I have owned two in my life and they're gorgeous and very protective. If you do get one, make sure they are able to run and you start training as a puppy. A great large breed, although it has a bad rep, is a rottweiler. They're beautiful dogs and very good with children, especially if they are raised with them. Just don't expect them to play fetch. It's not in their nature.

i would suggest a golden retriever. I got mine when I was about 3 and my little brother was one, she let us sleep on her, pull her fur when we were trying to stand up or play, and she NOT ONCE in her entire life snipped at us. She was a wonderful, loving, protective, and smart dog. If a golden isn't your choice, I would suggest to you a female dog, they are more calm.

Just don't get a chow chow, they have bad temperament.

if you are gonna get a puppy, and are thinking of any pure breed, they are a lot of work. they are more hyper than a mixed breed puppy. i have a beagle. great with the kids, but chews everything. i also have a collie, who thinks she is thier mother. (she herds them while playing in the yard.) I also hear bordercollies are nice
